DESCRIPTION

There are corners of a house that don't call for a large piece of furniture. They call for a piece of furniture that knows how to fit in.

This vintage occasional table is made of solid oak from the 1970s, in the Louis XV Provencal style — the tradition of French country furniture when it was still made piece by piece. The doors with curvilinear carvings, the scalloped skirt, and the scrolled legs are not added ornamentation: they are hand-carved directly into the oak itself.

The wood has the tiger-striped grain characteristic of solid oak, that natural striation that appears when the wood is quarter-sawn. The handles are patinated bronze — two rings on the drawer, two spherical knobs on the doors. The hinges, also original brass, give the front a visual weight that few modern reproductions achieve. One drawer at the top, two doors below with ample space behind them.

75 centimeters wide, 76 high, 44 deep. Its proportions make it versatile: it works as a hallway console, as an occasional table in the living room or bedroom, as a spacious bedside table, or, with a stone sink on top, as a bathroom vanity in a country house. Authentic Provencal furniture is not mass-produced — French rural proportions have their own visual weight.

No two are alike. There will be no restocking.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The curvilinear carving of the doors. It's not applied relief: it's worked into the solid oak panel itself, with a sinuous curve called chantournage in French cabinetry. Each door is slightly different — the cabinetmaker's hand always leaves its mark.

→ The curved legs with a scrolled foot. It's a pure Louis XV detail, adapted to French country furniture. The volute carved in solid wood is the first thing that gets lost in current chipboard reproductions.

→ The grained solid oak. The tiger-striped grain of quarter-sawn oak doesn't appear in modern veneers — it's simply a matter of cutting the wood correctly and letting it age for five decades. The current honey tone is the result of the original varnish plus half a century of light exposure.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

In the workshop, we have thoroughly checked the structure, adjusted the drawer in its runners so that it slides in and out effortlessly, and verified that the original hinges and hardware maintain their function without play. The wood has been hand-cleaned, preserving the original varnish, and the tone has been evened out where time had lightened the upper area due to use.

The drawer slides smoothly, the two doors close perfectly, and the interior is clean. The structure is firm, and the solid oak retains its feel and weight. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specializing since 2015 in antique furniture, with its own workshop in Navalcarnero 30 minutes from Madrid and serving over 3,500 families throughout Spain.

Preguntas frecuentes
