DESCRIPTION

Some furniture is designed for a wall, while other pieces are designed for the center of a room. The latter are recognizable by their back: if it is as finely crafted as the front, the piece was made to be viewed from all sides.

This vintage mahogany side table was made in France at the beginning of the 20th century in the Louis XVI style: fluted uprights, column-turned legs, and bronze garlands, bows, and crossed ribbons. It arrived from a French brocante, and we chose it for its green marble top and because the bronze ribbons are on all four corners, including the back ones.

The frame is mahogany, with the grain visible and the reddish hue that the wood acquires over the years. The top is a slab of green marble veined in white, framed by a wooden molding. The drawer features a bronze branch-shaped pull; the door has a molded oval medallion with a garland of bronze-gilt flowers and bows, four laurel branches in the corners, and a rosette as a knob. The sides and back are paneled, and the legs are finished with gadrooned collars at the top and sabots at the bottom. Below, there is a shelf with a curved front.

42 cm wide, 36.5 cm deep, and 78 cm high. It is a tall, narrow side table: perfect next to an armchair, beside a sofa, in an entryway as a pedestal for a lamp, or between two windows with a vase on top. Since it is finished on all four sides, it can be placed away from the wall. It also works next to a bed: at 78 cm, the top sits higher than a standard modern mattress.

FOUR DEFINING DETAILS

→ The back. A paneled back and bronze ribbons on the rear uprights, just like on the front. This is what distinguishes it from a nightstand: it doesn't have an "ugly side."

→ The green marble. A slab veined in white, with a polished edge, set into a mahogany molding. It provides the cool surface desired for a side table: for a glass, a lamp, or anything you want to set down without worry.

→ The bronzes. Garlands with bows on the door medallion, laurel branches in the corners, crossed ribbons on the uprights, and gadrooned collars on the legs. All are original, with the wear expected from use on the gilding.

→ The drawer. Dovetail joined, with the interior wood unvarnished and darkened by age. It slides out completely, revealing its construction.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In our workshop, the entire piece was cleaned (wood, marble, and bronzes) and the structure was checked: the stability of the legs, the fit of the shelf, and the operation of the drawer and door. It has not been stained, painted, or had any bronzes replaced.

The patina is original: the tone of the mahogany and the wear on the gilding are exactly as they were when it arrived from France. The structure is sturdy, the drawer glides smoothly, and the door closes properly. Ready to be placed exactly where it belongs.

What we know about this piece

The Louis XVI style returned to French workshops at the end of the 19th century and never left: straight lines, fluted uprights, and bronze garlands and bows. This small table was made of mahogany in the early 20th century and came from a French flea market. It features a green marble top and bronze ribbons on all four uprights, including the back ones: it was made to be seen from all sides. In the workshop, it was cleaned and its structure checked. It was not stained, and no bronze was replaced.

Frequently asked questions

Is it an original period side table or a reproduction?

It is an original early 20th-century French piece. This is confirmed by the dovetail jointed drawer with wood darkened by use on the inside, the wear on the gilding of the bronze reliefs, and the mahogany patina, which has been left untouched.

What restoration work has been carried out?

A complete cleaning of the wood, marble, and bronzes, and a general inspection of the structure: leveling the legs, fitting the shelf, and checking the movement of the drawer and door. No staining, painting, or replacement of bronzes has been done. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Where does this piece look best in the home?

Next to an armchair or sofa, as a pedestal for a lamp in an entryway, or freestanding away from a wall: it is finished on all four sides. At 42 cm wide and 78 cm high, it also serves well as a tall bedside table.
