DESCRIPTION

A dining room is defined by its table. Not by its size, nor by its price. But by what it conveys when empty, and what it creates when full.

This Castilian lyre table dates from the mid-20th century, a direct descendant of the Spanish Baroque cabinetmaking tradition. Two lyre-shaped legs —cut out, hand-carved with acanthus, volute and floral relief motifs— support a solid walnut or similar wood tabletop of good width and generous grain. The legs are joined by a black wrought iron stretcher with crossed arrow finials: artisan-wrought iron, not serially cast. No current manufacturer produces this type of wrought iron hardware with this level of detail.

The tabletop, made of assembled planks, shows the grain typical of solid wood with decades of use. The legs have all the ornamentation carved into the profile of the lyre: the work seen from the side is as elaborate as the front, with a coiled volute at the feet and a dentil molding at the top.

At 190 cm long and 87 cm deep, it is a generously scaled dining table. It comfortably seats 8 people, up to 10 on special occasions. It works well on its own in a dining room with stone flooring or dark wood flooring, and naturally complements Castilian chairs from the same period.

No two are alike. No restocking will be available.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The wrought iron stretcher with arrows. This is the element that distinguishes this table from any reproduction. Hand-wrought iron has an irregularity and tension that cast iron cannot imitate. The crossed arrows in the center are a primary Castilian heraldic motif.

→ The carving of the lyre legs. The acanthus and volute relief covers the entire visible surface of the legs — front, side, and lower profile. It is the work of a carver, not a machine. The wood grain runs through the carved motifs, making each leg distinct from the other.

→ The scale. 190 cm long allows 8 people to sit comfortably without the table feeling small. It is a table to live with, not to decorate a catalog.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

The table was structurally inspected. The tabletop was cleaned, treated, and conditioned to stabilize the wood. The legs and wrought iron hardware were inspected and consolidated. The joint between the tabletop and legs is solid.

The structure is firm and stable. The tabletop is level. The wrought iron retains its original patina. It arrives ready to take its place.
