DESCRIPTION

Guadamecí is leather embossed with a hammer and polychromed by hand. It is a Spanish craft of Cordovan origin that almost no one practices anymore. The top of this table is a single piece.

It is a Spanish display table from the mid-20th century, a period reproduction of the Spanish Renaissance, of the console or lyre type.

The top is not made of wood: it is a guadamecí leather panel, embossed, engraved and polychromed by hand in gold, ochre, vermilion and black. In the center, on a black background, an oval cartouche with a mannerist mask surrounded by acanthus; around it, a border of scrolls and, in the corners and centers, medallions with profile portraits in the style of Roman coins. The entire perimeter is finished with gilded bronze hemispheres.

The base is solid walnut: two carved and openwork sides with semi-circular arches on turned pilasters, joined by a central crossbar and by hand-forged S-shaped iron braces that connect the base and top.

The leather is preserved without tears, with its original patina.

No two are alike. There will be no replenishment.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The guadamecí top. It is the piece: an almost lost craft, intact and in good condition on a functional piece of furniture.

→ The all'antica medallions. Profile portraits crafted like on a Roman coin, a different one in each corner.

→ The S-shaped forged braces. They hold the top to the base and, incidentally, tell you where the piece comes from.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

We reviewed the structure of the walnut base and nourished the leather to preserve it without tears and with its patina. Due to its height of 68 cm, it is a table to be free-standing, not against the wall.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specialized since 2015 in antique furniture, with its own workshop in Navalcarnero and more than 3,500 families throughout Spain.
