DESCRIPTION

A small hallway doesn't need more furniture. It needs a focal point.

This oval mirror was made in the 1950s, when frames were still carved in wood and gilded with gold leaf. A rococo cartouche around an oval: the shape that had been used for two centuries for mirrors presiding over an entrance.

The frame is a succession of volutes, acanthus leaves, and rocaille, with a small carved crest at the top. The glass is beveled: the inclined edge draws a line of light around the oval, something that almost no factory-made mirror has today. The gilding is collected in the hollows of the carving and lightens in the reliefs.

It measures 69 cm high by 52 cm wide. A size that fits where a large one wouldn't: above a narrow console, in a bathroom, in a stairwell, above a bedroom dresser. It provides light and a shape that breaks with all the straight lines around it.

No two are alike. There will be no restocking.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The bevel of the glass. The edge of the mirror is cut at an angle, not squarely. This is what makes the light refract into a thin line around the oval. A glass detail that increases the cost of the piece and that mass production eliminated decades ago.

→ The cartouche shape. The frame is not a clean oval: it is a rococo cartouche, with the profile moving in curves and counter-curves. This silhouette is what makes a mirror a decorative piece on its own, no matter what hangs below it.

→ The gold leaf on the carving. The gold is applied by hand to the relief and leaves the background of the hollows warmer than the crests. It gives depth to the carving. A flat, painted gilding flattens the piece; this one enhances it.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

We inspected the entire frame, consolidated the points of the gilding that had lost their grip, and checked that the glass and its bevel were firm in the frame. We reinforced the hanging system. We respected the tone of the gold: a piece that already has the right shine is not re-gilded.

The structure is firm, the mirror is securely attached and ready to hang. The gold leaf retains its warm and uneven shine. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specialized since 2015 in antique furniture, with its own workshop in Navalcarnero and more than 3,500 families throughout Spain.

Frequently asked questions

Is it an original mirror or a reproduction?

It is an original vintage piece from the 1950s, with a hand-carved, gold-leafed wooden frame and beveled glass. The bevel and the hand-applied gold leaf in the carved recesses are details that modern reproductions do not replicate.

What restoration work has been carried out?

We inspected the frame, consolidated the less secure gold leaf areas, checked the beveled glass's fastening, and reinforced the hanging mechanism, all while respecting the original gold tone. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Where does this mirror look best in a home?

At 52 × 69 cm, it's a format for spaces where a large one wouldn't fit: above a narrow console, in a powder room, over a chest of drawers, or in a stairwell. Its oval shape breaks up the straight lines of the wall.

How is shipping handled for a mirror like this?

Shipping is free throughout the Iberian Peninsula. It includes indoor delivery and packaging removal. We manage transportation with companies specializing in valuable items.
