DESCRIPTION

Some walls don't call for a piece of furniture. They call for a line.

A long, narrow plane at hand height, and nothing more.

This polychrome vintage console was made in the early 20th century in the Louis XVI style, with the clear air of Gustavian Swedish furniture. Solid wood, painted and hand-decorated from origin.

The apron carries the work. On a light background, scrolls and plant motifs in ochre and gold, traced one by one along the front.

The four legs are conical and fluted, the signature of neoclassicism. Where they start, a carved capital with leaves still retains traces of the old gilding.

The polychromy is worn on the edges and on the top, revealing the wood underneath. This wear has not been corrected.

141 cm wide, 43 cm deep, and 94 cm high. The depth is what makes it placeable: it fits through a narrow hallway without blocking the way, and at 94 cm high, it sits above the back of most sofas.

WHY WE HAVE NOT REPAINTED IT

→ The worn polychromy. On edges, corners, and the top, the paint has worn away, revealing the wood. Repainting it would create a new piece of furniture with an antique shape, which is exactly what is worthless.

→ The hand-painted apron. Scrolls and leaves in ochre and gold on a light background: the design is not repeated exactly from one end of the front to the other.

→ The capitals. Where the apron meets the leg, a carving of leaves still retains traces of the original gilding. This is the first area to disappear in aggressive stripping.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

The entire structure was reviewed, starting with the joints of the apron with the four legs, which is where a console of this width accumulates tension. What needed it was adjusted and reinforced.

The polychromy has not been touched: no repainting, no retouching, no color matching. The finish shown in the photos is what the piece has.

The structure is firm, and the four legs rest level. The top is intact, with the marks of use typical of its age. Ready to be placed where it belongs.

Frequently asked questions

Is it an original piece or a reproduction?

It is an original early 20th-century console table, in Louis XVI style with a Gustavian touch. Solid wood, original polychromy, and a hand-painted skirt: the scrolling pattern does not repeat exactly from one end to the other of the front, and remnants of the old gilding remain on the capitals.

What restoration work has been carried out?

The entire structure was checked, with attention to the joints of the skirt with the four legs, and anything that needed it was adjusted and reinforced. The polychromy has not been repainted or retouched: the wear visible in the photos is original and remains as is. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Where does this console table look best at home?

It measures 141 cm wide, 43 cm deep, and 94 cm high. That depth allows it to fit into a narrow hallway without obstructing the passage. It also works behind a freestanding sofa, or as a dressing table in a bedroom.
