Vintage Mirror and Console Set with Marble | Louis XV Style Sage Green Hallway Set

A hallway is crossed twenty times a day and decorated once. Whatever is placed there is seen more than any other piece of furniture in the house.

This vintage mirror and console set was made in the 20th century following the Louis XV model: a sinuous contoured frame with carved rocaille and shells, and a two-support console with volutes under a marble top. The two pieces share carving, scale, and finish. They are sold together, as a set.

The mirror has a shell in the center of each side, acanthus leaves in the corners, and an openwork crest at the top and bottom. The console rests on two fluted corbels with acanthus capitals, which descend in a volute to a claw foot and are joined by a straight stretcher. Between the two, an openwork apron with a garland of flowers and and leaves. Above, a single-piece white marble top veined in gray.

The color is from our workshop: hand-painted sage green, then stripped on each relief, revealing an ocher tone on the edges of the carving. The piece is vintage, the color is ours.

The mirror measures 82 cm wide and 139 cm high. The console, 90 cm wide, 34 cm deep and 52 cm high, with the marble in place. Thirty-four centimeters deep is what a narrow hallway needs to have a console without obstructing the passage. Its 52 cm height places it below a table: it is a low console, of the kind placed under a mirror without competing with it. In a living room, it works equally well, on the wall of the sofa or at the end of a wide hallway.

THREE DETAILS THAT DEFINE IT

→ The two matching pieces. Finding a Louis XV mirror is easy. Finding the corresponding console, with the same carving and the same tone, is what doesn't happen. Here they arrived together and they leave together.

→ The claw feet under the fluted volute. Each support descends from an acanthus capital to a claw, in a single carved piece. It is the detail that distinguishes a console from a shelf with legs.

→ The marble top. White veined in gray, a single piece with a straight edge. On a painted piece of furniture, it is the only surface that is not touched and the most used: keys, mail, a lamp.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

The structure of the console was checked: the plumb of the two supports on their plinths, the stretcher and the marble seat on the frame. The mirror frame, the fixing of the glass, and the two hanging points were checked. Both pieces were hand-sanded before painting.

The sage green is ours and is declared: hand-painted and stripped on reliefs and edges, with the same wear on the frame and console so that they read as a single piece. The carving and marble are original. The set rests plumb and the mirror hangs from its two anchors. It is ready to be brought home.
