DESCRIPTION

A bedroom or a hallway with a bare wall calls for a low-profile, substantial piece of furniture that doesn't need to be broken in to fit in. One that already has the color in place.

This bombé chest of drawers was manufactured in France in the mid-20th century, following the Louis XV model: a curved front with three drawers, an openwork apron, and cabriole legs. It came from a French antique market. We bought it for its finish: a two-tone washed wood, the kind that isn't made the same anymore because no one wants to wait for time to naturally lighten it.

The body is bombé: the sides and front curve outwards from the top to the plinth, with cabriole legs ending in a scroll. The lower apron features an openwork carving with a shell and acanthus leaf motif, with two through openings in the center. The handles are made of bronze, with a repeated garland and mask design on all three rows, and a loose shell handle in the center of each drawer. The drawers close with visible dovetail joints on the sides.

103 cm wide, 57 cm deep, and 80 cm high. It is a generously proportioned chest of drawers, designed for a spacious bedroom, although it also works as a hallway console table under a mirror or as a low sideboard in a living room.

WHAT TO LOOK AT CLOSELY

→ The finish. Two-tone washed wood, lighter in areas of friction and darker in corners. It has not been touched: it is the color it brought from the French market.

→ The dovetail drawers. They are visible when opened, in all three drawers, and are proof that the box was well-made on the inside, not just on the outside.

→ The apron carving. Openwork shell and acanthus in the center, with two through openings that visually lighten a large piece.

INTERVENTION AND CONSERVATION — NAVALCARNERO WORKSHOP, MADRID

The entire structure was reviewed: the plumbness of the four legs, the fit of the three drawers in their guides, and the fastening of the openwork apron. The entire piece underwent a complete cleaning.

The exterior finish has not been touched: it retains its two tones of washed wood, with the corresponding marks of use.

What we know about this piece

The bombé commode is a Louis XV invention: the front and sides curve outward, and the piece of furniture ceases to be a box. French workshops continued making them two centuries later. This one is from the mid-20th century and came from a French antique market. Openwork apron with shell and acanthus motifs, garland mounts, and dovetail drawers. It arrived with the wood washed in two tones, lighter where it is touched by hand. In the workshop, the structure was inspected and it was cleaned. The finish was left untouched.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know this chest of drawers is truly mid-20th century?

A: You can see it in the construction: the three drawers have hand-carved dovetail joints on the sides, visible when opened, and the interior retains the patina and wear characteristic of a piece with over seventy years of use.

What work was done in the workshop?

A: The entire structure was inspected, the three drawers were adjusted in their runners, and a thorough cleaning was performed. The exterior washed wood finish has not been touched: it is the original finish of the piece.

Where does this chest of drawers look best in a home?

A: It works well in a bedroom as a main dresser, in a hallway under a mirror, or in a living room as a low sideboard. At 103 cm wide, it requires a medium-sized wall.
