Large Spanish walnut bargueño with trestle table and wrought iron fittings

A bargueño is not just another piece of furniture. It is the piece that presides over the home it inhabits, and everyone who enters knows it.

This is a Spanish bargueño-cabinet from the first half of the 20th century, carved from solid walnut as a period reproduction of the Spanish Renaissance display furniture. It is structured in two independent sections, in the classical manner.

The upper section is divided into three bays. The central one, topped by a semicircular arch that extends into a barrel vault, houses a carved door; the side bays are flanked by rope-twist pilasters. The carving is manual, in high relief: eight-pointed stars, rhombuses, fans, and floral motifs of Mudejar and Renaissance origin. Cast brass hardware, with openwork escutcheons and tear-drop pull handles, completes the ensemble.

The lower section is a taquillón table: a thick walnut top on four turned baluster legs, joined by stretchers and crossed by hand-forged iron stays in the shape of a lyre.

The patina is original. It has not been repainted: on a piece like this, time has already done half the work.

No two are alike. There will be no restocking.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The barrel vault over the central door. It's architecture, not carpentry: a piece of furniture built like a building.

→ The lyre-shaped wrought iron stays. They support the table and, incidentally, attest to its high-period Spanish origin.

→ The geometric carving against the light. By day it is a drawing; at dusk, with grazing light, it becomes pure relief.

We reviewed the complete structure of both sections and secured joints and hardware. We nourished and preserved the original patina instead of altering it. The two independent sections also facilitate transport and placement.
