Vintage Two-Part Washed Oak Wardrobe | Louis XV Style

In almost every home, there is plenty of wall space vertically, but not enough horizontally. Few pieces of furniture understand this: most grow in width.

This two-part cabinet was made in the mid-20th century, following the French Louis XV model: doors with cut-out molding, a carved palmette on the front, chamfered corners, and a pierced skirt on scrolled feet. The upper section rests on the lower one, and each closes with its own door, lock, and key.

The wood is oak, stripped in our workshop to its raw state: open pore, matte finish, without stain or glossy varnish. The interior was painted here in grayish blue, shelves included.

The two sides of the upper section do not have the same panel arrangement: each side has its own panel design, and one retains a reinforcing strip of lighter wood. It's visible, and we prefer to mention it: it's a trace of the piece's construction and history, not a defect to be hidden.

68 cm wide, 54 cm deep, and 190 cm high. The width is the deciding factor: at 68 cm, it fits in a bathroom, a kitchen niche, or an entryway where a double wardrobe wouldn't. Above, three shelves; below, an open space for heavier items.

WHAT TO LOOK AT CLOSELY

→ The carved palmette. In the center of the upper front, between the cut-out moldings, with its small echo in the skirt. It's the signature gesture of provincial Louis XV.

→ The two locks. Each section closes with its own key, and both turn. Locking was part of the furniture, not an extra.

→ The uneven sides. A different panel arrangement on each side of the upper section. It's not visible from the front; up close, it tells the story of how it was made.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

The two sections were inspected separately and their fit one on top of the other. One side of the upper section was reinforced, both doors were adjusted, and the locks were checked: both keys turn and lock.

The stripping was done here: paint removal, hand sanding, and a matte finish that leaves the oak pore tactile. The interior and shelves were painted in grayish blue. The doors close flush, and the entire piece sits plumb. Ready to be placed where it belongs.
