DESCRIPTION

There are pieces that integrate into a home and pieces that organize it around them. The latter are rare: they have presence, scale, and a story that cannot be improvised.

This antique Chinese cabinet is one of them. It comes from late 19th-century oriental carpentry workshops, built from solid wood with the two-part structure—upper case and main body—characteristic of large Chinese cabinets. A typology no longer manufactured with such honest materials.

The first thing that captivates you are the root wood panels, with their knotty and unrepeatable grain, framed in the deep black of the traditional Chinese finish. The large brass medallions—the central circle, the corner discs—are solid and have aged to a warm tone that no reproduction can achieve. Opening the doors reveals the true craftsmanship: shelves, interior drawers, and compartments crafted by hand, with the exposed wood betraying its age.

At 230 cm high, 120 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, it is a large format piece designed to command its space: a master bedroom, a high-ceilinged entrance hall, a living room that calls for a focal point. It is not a discreet piece of furniture, and it doesn't pretend to be.

No two are alike. There will be no restocking.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The root panels. That knotty grain, almost like turbulent water, is not designed: it was drawn by the tree over decades. Each panel is distinct and, together, they give the front a movement that the smooth surface of industrial furniture will never have.

→ The marks of time, intentionally preserved. We restored the cabinet without erasing its biography: the small wear and tear of the black finish, the aged brass, and the patina are part of its value, not defects to be covered up.

→ The two-part construction with solid brass hardware. The large central circular medallion is not merely an ornament: it is the traditional closure for these Chinese cabinets, and it continues to fulfill its function after more than a hundred years.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

Our work here was conservation, not cosmetic. We reviewed and reinforced the structure of both bodies, adjusted doors, drawers, and hinges to ensure precise operation, secured the brass hardware, and treated the wood against wood-boring insects to guarantee its integrity. We respected the original finish and its patina.

The cabinet arrives sturdy and fully functional: the doors close with their medallion, the drawers slide, and the structure is solid. It retains the marks of use that tell its story. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración —specialists since 2015 in antique furniture, with our own workshop in Navalcarnero and over 3,500 families served throughout Spain.

Preguntas frecuentes
