DESCRIPTION

There's a huge difference between a piece of furniture that imitates antiques and a piece that has truly lived. You notice it as soon as you touch it: in the weight of the wood, in a carving that no one would do by hand today, in marble that was already there when your great-grandparents were young.

This sideboard with a mirror is an antique piece from the late 19th century, in the Henri II style. One of those that presided over formal dining rooms: a lower body with doors and a drawer, a red marble top, and a mirror crowned by a carved pediment that reaches 225 cm in height.

The doors feature relief carving: a cup with a flame surrounded by intertwining leaves. On the sides, Solomon-style spiral turned columns, the kind only seen in truly antique furniture. The veined red marble tops the lower body, and the beveled mirror retains its original glass. Two small drawers flank the mirror, for small items. Each carving is handmade, one by one.

At 122 cm wide, 50 cm deep, and 225 cm high, it is a piece of commanding presence. Designed for a dining room with high ceilings, a welcoming entryway, or any corner that calls for a piece to start decorating an entire home.

No two are alike. There will be no restocking.

── WHAT WE LOVE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The contrast between a 19th-century structure and a contemporary blue. The carving is period; we applied the color by hand and in a distressed (decapé) finish, so that a century-old piece can enter a modern home without looking like a museum exhibit.

→ The carved pediment and spiral columns. This is the type of cabinetmaking that stopped being done a hundred years ago because no one had the time — or the hands — to do it anymore.

→ The red marble and the beveled mirror, both original. The marble can withstand anything you put on it; the mirror has that slightly aged depth that a new mirror doesn't offer.

── RESTORED AND CUSTOMIZED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

We treated the wood against woodworm and left it free of xylophages, inspected the entire structure and adjusted the doors, the drawer, and the small mirror drawers. We sanded by hand and applied the distressed blue finish, working the wear on the reliefs and edges so that the carving breathes and the wood shows through where it should. The marble and mirror were cleaned and remain original.

The doors lock with a key, the drawer slides well, and the piece stands firmly on its turned legs. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specializing in antique furniture since 2015, with its own workshop in Navalcarnero and serving over 3,500 families throughout Spain.

Preguntas frecuentes
