An entrance with two doors, a long hallway, or a wall with a window in the center all call for the same thing: symmetry. A piece on each side.

This pair of hand-painted demi-lune console tables was made in France in the seventies, featuring the neoclassical lines of the demi-lune console: a semi-circular top, fluted blocks, and straight legs that taper toward the floor. They are 20th-century pieces, not 18th-century. They came from a French brocante. We chose them because there were two.

The background is cream, speckled with tiny dark dots. On top, a brush-painted bouquet adorns the surface, with a rose in the center surrounded by yellow, pink, and blue flowers. The tabletop also features an olive green pinstripe that follows the curve of the edge.

The curved front is divided into three sections separated by blocks with triple fluting. Each section bears its own bouquet, and one of them contains a drawer with a turned wooden pull. Below, a demi-lune shelf echoes the floral motifs.

Each console measures 60 cm wide, 32.5 cm deep, and 77 cm high. With that depth, they fit into a narrow entryway or hallway without obstructing the path. One on each side of a door, beneath two paintings, or flanking a sofa against a wall. They weigh 10 kg each.

WHAT TO LOOK AT CLOSELY

→ The flowers. They are brush-painted, without stencils: the leaves vary in length and orientation from one console to the other, and no two bouquets are exactly alike.

→ The speckling. The cream background is not solid. It is mottled with small dots that provide texture and disguise daily wear.

→ The two patinas. One console has a lighter cream tone, while the other is a toastier shade. They have not been matched.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, the painted flowers on the tops, fronts, and shelves were touched up by hand, without altering the design or the colors.

The cream background is original, and the patina on both consoles was left untouched: the scuffs on the legs and the small marks on the tabletops remain. The drawers open and close. They are ready to be brought home.
