DESCRIPTION

There are pieces of furniture that fill a wall and pieces that organize it. The latter have two heights, lock, and simultaneously store what is used every day and what one does not want to see.

This antique two-part desk was made in 19th-century Germany, in the style that Central European rural Baroque gave to writing furniture: a three-drawer chest with a drop-leaf lid and, above it, a single-door cupboard with an arched top. We chose it for the paint: red rhombuses on olive green, painted one by one and outlined by hand.

It is made of pine, hand-painted in green, with moldings and ball feet in ocher red—the same red as the rhombuses on the front. The lid lowers onto two supports, revealing a writing surface in natural wood, two small drawers, and three cubbies. The cupboard contains two shelves behind a paneled door. The drawers are assembled with hand-cut dovetail joints, with the marking lines still visible, and the locks are made of iron with diamond-shaped escutcheons that echo the motif on the front. The back consists of wide, unpainted pine planks, darkened by time.

The paint is the original finish the piece had when it arrived from Germany. It has not been retouched in the workshop.

134 cm wide, 62.5 cm deep, and 200 cm high, with the writing surface at 72.5 cm. It consists of two parts that travel separately and are assembled at home. It is a piece for an office or living room for writing and then closing up; in a spacious primary bedroom or a wide foyer, it functions as a tall wall cabinet.

WHY THIS PIECE AND NOT ANOTHER

→ The painted rhombuses. Ocher red on olive green, painted one by one and outlined by hand. It is the paint the piece arrived with, without workshop retouching.

→ The lid lock. Iron case with rivets and a handmade slotted-head screw. The same one that has secured the desk since the piece was made.

→ The scale. Two meters high, 134 cm wide, and 62.5 cm deep: desk, three drawers, and a cupboard in a single piece that occupies the wall and closes completely.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

A complete structural inspection was carried out, inside and out: leveling the two parts and fitting the cupboard onto the chest, checking drawer runners and bottoms, hinges and lid supports, locks and keys.

The paint, patina, and exterior finish have not been touched; they are as they were when the piece arrived. The structure is firm, the drawers slide, the lid lowers, and the cupboard and desk lock securely. It is ready for your home.

What we know about this piece

In rural Central Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, furniture was made of pine and painted. Wood was what was available; color was what distinguished one house from another. This desk was made in Germany in the 19th century: a three-drawer chest with a drop-leaf top and a cupboard above. The diamonds, ochre red on olive green, are painted one by one, and the iron lock escutcheons repeat the design. The entire structure was checked in the workshop. The paint was not touched: it is the original.

Frequently asked questions

Is it an original piece or a reproduction?

It is a 19th-century two-piece German desk. This is confirmed by the hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, the iron box lock on the lid with handmade rivets and screws, and the back made of wide pine boards darkened by time. The paint is the original finish, not a workshop redo.

What restoration work has been carried out?

A complete structural overhaul, inside and out: leveling of the two sections, fitting of the cupboard, drawer runners, hinges and lid stays, as well as locks and keys. The paint, patina, and exterior finish have not been touched. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Where does this piece fit best in the home?

In an office or a living room, as a desk that can be closed when finished. It also works well in a master bedroom or a wide hallway as a wall unit with storage. It measures 134 cm wide, 62.5 cm deep, and 200 cm high, with the writing surface at 72.5 cm.

How is the shipping of a piece of this size handled?

Shipping is free throughout the Peninsula. The two sections travel separately, and our own staff will assemble them inside your home, provided access allows, and remove the packaging. We do not deliver to the curb.
