DESCRIPTION

There are pieces of furniture that are bought for how they look. An antique chest of drawers is also bought for how it's made: open a drawer and everything is there.

This antique mahogany chest of drawers was manufactured in France in the first third of the 19th century, when the Empire style brought together the best of every craft: cabinetmaking in flamed mahogany, a stone top, and gilded cast bronzes. It features a frieze drawer under the marble, three spacious drawers between two freestanding columns, and block feet topped with palmettes.

The fronts and sides are veneered in flamed mahogany, with the grain opened in waves that no dye can imitate. The top is black marble mottled with white, the stone these chests originally had. And the bronze does the rest: a central chiseled applique with figures and garlands, palmettes on the uprights and feet, crown keyholes, and rosette knobs. The drawers are assembled with hand-cut, thin, and uneven dovetail joints, with light-colored period wood interiors.

125 cm wide, 60 cm deep, and 87.5 cm high. It's a bedroom chest with real depth, and with that marble, it works equally well in a hallway or living room, as a low piece under a mirror or painting.

WHY THIS PIECE AND NOT ANOTHER

→ The central bronze applique. Chiseled, with figures among flower garlands, fixed on the frieze drawer. It's the type of bronze that dates a chest of this period, and this one retains its gilding and patina.

→ The black marble. A single piece, mottled white, with the straight edge of the era. Two hundred years later, it's still the most resistant surface a piece of furniture can have.

→ The flamed mahogany. The fronts were veneered with grain opened in waves, the natural pattern of the wood. No two chests are the same.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

The entire structure was reviewed: the plumb of the feet, the seating of the columns, and the fastening of the solid wood back. The four drawers were adjusted on their runners, the fastening of bronzes and knobs was checked, and the wood was treated against wood-boring insects.

The mahogany was cleaned and hand-waxed, respecting its finish and patina. The bronzes were gently cleaned, without restoring a shine that is not appropriate for them. The marble sits perfectly level on the body. It's ready to go home.

Frequently asked questions

Is it an original Empire chest of drawers or a reproduction?

It is an original French piece from the first third of the 19th century. The drawers are assembled with hand-cut dovetails, the bronzes retain their gilding and patina, and the back is made of solid period planks: a construction that no reproduction replicates.

What restoration work has been carried out?

The structure was revised, the four drawers were adjusted, the wood was treated against wood-boring insects, and the mahogany was cleaned and hand-waxed respecting its patina. The bronzes were gently cleaned, without over-polishing. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Where does this piece look best at home?

At 125 × 60 × 87.5 cm, it is a spacious bedroom chest of drawers. Thanks to its black marble and bronzes, it works equally well in a hallway or living room, as a low piece under a mirror or a painting.

How is the shipping of a piece of this size managed?

Shipping is free throughout the Iberian Peninsula. Delivery is carried out by the store's own staff: we place the piece inside the home, where access allows, and remove the packaging. We do not deliver to the street level.
