DESCRIPTION

A large kitchen or dining room needs a piece of furniture that organizes the entire wall from top to bottom: what is used daily in sight, what is stored behind a door, and a free countertop in the middle for serving.

This antique oak *vaisselier* sideboard was made in France between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in the Louis XV country-house style: arched panel doors, a carved scalloped apron, and scroll feet. We chose it for the full plate rack on the upper section and for the carving, which is repeated on the apron, the pilasters, and the two cupboards, leaving no plain front.

It is made of solid oak, washed to its natural tone with the open grain visible. The base features three drawers with iron pulls on flower-shaped plates, three doors with cutout iron escutcheons and keys, and two pilasters carved in a double twist. The apron has a shell at the center, rosettes, and scrolls. Above, five shelves with a rail to support plates upright, and on each side, a narrow cupboard with three shelves, a medallion carved with a rosette, and an iron latch closure with an openwork plate. The drawers are dovetail joined.

185 cm wide, 52 cm deep, and 225 cm high. It consists of two sections that travel separately and are assembled at home. At 52 cm deep, it fits in a kitchen as a dish cabinet, in a dining room with a two-meter free wall, or in a large living room as both a bookcase and sideboard: the plate rack shelves hold books just as they do plates.

WHAT IS NOT MADE TODAY

→ The plate rack. Five shelves with a front rail so that plates stand upright, in plain sight, without slipping. This is what turns a sideboard into a *vaisselier* and the reason they are sought after.

→ The twisted pilasters. Two carved relief ropes that cross along the entire lower body between the doors. With side lighting, the front changes.

→ The iron fittings. Spring latch with openwork plate on the high cupboards, cutout escutcheons below, and pulls on six-petal flowers. All iron, all working.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

The structure of both sections and the fit of the upper part onto the lower part were checked; doors and drawers were adjusted, and the locks and latches were repaired until they were working with their keys. The oak was washed and finished by hand to the natural tone it has now, without stain or color.

The marks of time have been left untouched: the nicks and stains on the oak are those it brought from France. The structure is firm, the doors close, and the drawers slide. It arrives ready to take its place.

What we know about this piece

The vaisselier originated in the French provinces during the 18th century with a specific purpose: to display tableware. Plates standing upright, in plain sight, were a way of signaling a household's status. This piece was crafted from oak between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, featuring the Louis XV style typical of country homes. It retains both sections and the complete five-shelf plate rack. In the workshop, the oak was cleaned and the latches repaired. Dents and stains were left exactly as they were.
