DESCRIPTION

A dining room or kitchen wall calls for a tall piece of furniture. One that stores all the dinnerware and, when closed, hides everything from view.

This antique two-piece walnut sideboard was made in France in the mid-19th century, in the Louis Philippe style: straight volumes, a cove cornice, plain panels, and the wood grain as its only ornamentation. It came from an antiques dealer. We chose it for the pattern of the walnut and because its locks work.

On the four doors, the panels feature book-matched walnut veneer: the grain rises from the center like a feather. The cornice and the base repeat the same pattern horizontally. Black stringing frames the doors, drawers, and top.

The escutcheons are made of cut-out iron with a wavy profile, as are the iron keys. The two frieze drawers lock. Inside, the upper section has two shelves and a small drawer; the lower section has a shelf at mid-height.

145 cm wide, 63 cm deep, and 227 cm high. In a dining room, it stores the dinnerware and linens for the whole house; in an open kitchen, it serves as a larder; in a high-ceilinged living room, it occupies an entire wall. It requires ceilings of at least 240 cm. It is delivered in two sections and weighs 80 kg.

THREE DEFINING DETAILS

→ The grain. Book-matched walnut veneer on all four doors: each panel is a mirror image of its pair. That pattern is unique to this log and is not repeated elsewhere.

→ The escutcheons. Cut-out iron with a wavy profile, matching on all four doors. The locks have been serviced and close with their keys.

→ The cornice. A wide cove molding, with the walnut arranged horizontally, topping off the piece like an architectural feature. It is the signature of the Louis Philippe style.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, the structure of both sections and the door and drawer locks were checked, and the wood was treated against wood-boring insects. The entire piece was then cleaned without removing its finish.

The original patina and signs of age were left untouched: old wood-boring beetle holes, edge wear, and a seam on the top that time has opened remain. The structure is sturdy, the doors close properly, and the locks work.

What we know about this piece

Louis Philippe reigned in France between 1830 and 1848, and his name was given to a piece of furniture with straight lines, a cyma cornice, and exposed wood that continued to be made for decades. This two-part sideboard is French, from the mid-19th century, made of walnut, and came from an antique dealer. It retains its book-matched veneer panels and cut-iron escutcheons. In the workshop, the structure and locks were checked, and it was cleaned throughout. The patina was left as it was.

Frequently asked questions

Is it an original piece or a reproduction?

It is original: a mid-19th century French Louis Philippe style sideboard. This is confirmed by the book-matched walnut veneer, the cut-iron escutcheons, and the antique woodworm holes. It came from an antiques dealer and retains its original finish, with no workshop coloring.

What restoration work has been carried out?

The structure of the two sections was checked, the door and drawer locks were serviced, the wood was treated against xylophagous insects, and the entire piece was cleaned while maintaining its original patina. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Where does this piece look best at home?

In a dining room as a sideboard, in an open-plan kitchen as a cupboard, or in a high-ceilinged living room against a wall. It measures 145 cm wide, 63 cm deep, and 227 cm high, so it requires ceilings of at least 240 cm.

How is shipping managed for a piece of this size?
