DESCRIPTION

A living room with books in sight reads before one even sits in it. Behind glass, furthermore, they remain dust-free.

This antique carved oak display cabinet was made in northern France in the mid-19th century, following the Louis XV style that the French provinces continued to use throughout that century. It came from an antique dealer. We chose it for the carving and the glass, which is original.

Each door opens in an arch beneath a hand-carved crest: a rocaille shell in the center, curled acanthus leaves, and floral sprigs in the corners. Below, the crossbar of the glass repeats the design in a wavy molding with two shells. The solid panels feature molding with curved trim.

The glass is the original "water glass," with waves and slight distortions that change the reflection depending on the angle. The escutcheons are made of cut iron, and the lock, which is the original, closes with its key.

It measures 163 cm wide, 53 cm deep, and 205 cm high. Inside, there are four adjustable shelves on a notched rack. In a living room or office, it serves as a bookcase; in a dining room, for tableware and glassware. It fits easily under 2.40 m ceilings. It weighs 80 kg.

WHAT IS NOT MADE TODAY

→ The water glass. Mid-19th-century glass, hand-blown and drawn. The waves are visible as you walk by and slightly distort what is behind.

→ The carving. Rocaille, acanthus, and flowers gouged into solid oak. A shrinkage crack crosses the left crest following the grain: this is what oak does over the years.

→ The dowels. The door frames are mortise-and-tenon joined and fixed with wooden dowels, which are visible at the corners.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, the wood, the interior of the doors, and the shelves were inspected. The original idea was to strip it completely.

After the initial surface cleaning, it remained like this: with part of its patina and lighter areas that give texture to the oak. No color or stain has been applied, and the signs of age remain where they were. The original lock works with its key.

What we know about this piece

The glass-fronted bookcase entered French homes in the 18th century, when books moved out of chests and began to be displayed behind glass. In the provinces, they continued to be made of oak in the Louis XV style well into the 19th century. This one is from northern France, dating from the middle of that century, and came from an antique dealer. It retains its original wavy glass, the lock with its key, and the rocaille carving on the cresting. It was going to be completely stripped. After the initial cleaning, it was left as it is.
