What we know about this piece
Louis-Philippe style, between 1830 and 1870, stripped away carvings and let the wood speak: straight lines and book-matched flame mahogany veneer. This mahogany display cabinet is from the 19th century. It retains its four original panes of hand-drawn glass, which causes the objects behind them to ripple; this is the first thing that breaks and gets replaced. The blue interior arrived this way, with its wear and tear, and was not repainted. In the workshop, the dark varnish was removed, the mahogany was cleaned, and it was treated for wood-boring insects. The piece is period-authentic. The light tone is our own.
Frequently asked questions
Is this an original display cabinet or a reproduction?
It is a period piece from the 19th century, in the Louis Philippe style. The original wavy glass, the flame mahogany veneer mounted in a mirror pattern, the ogee cornice, the solid plank backing, and the assembly marks visible under the cornice are all signs of original craftsmanship. The only work performed in our workshop was a wood wash.
What is wavy glass?
It is glass made before the invention of the industrial flat-sheet process. It was blown, opened into a cylinder, and stretched by hand, so it was never perfectly smooth: it retains fine waves that slightly distort whatever is seen behind it. You can recognize it by moving your head in front of the glass, as the reflection ripples rather than moving in a straight line. It is fragile and usually replaced at the first sign of breakage, which is why few 19th-century pieces still have it.
What restoration work has been done?
The frame, cornice, base, and back were inspected, both doors were adjusted, and the four pieces of wavy glass were checked in their frames without any replacements. The wood was washed and hand-sanded to its natural tone, without varnish, and the piece was treated for wood-boring insects. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.
Where would this display cabinet look best at home?
With a depth of 45 cm and a height of 210 cm, it works well on the long wall of a living room, in a dining room next to the table, or in a study as a closed bookcase. It requires 210 cm of clear height: it is advisable to measure up to the molding or beam before deciding on a wall.
