Antique Gilt Oval Mirror | Louis XV Style Floral Carving

There’s a difference between illuminating a room and giving it light. The first is solved by a lamp; the second, almost always, is solved by gold.

This oval mirror with gold leaf comes from the late 19th century. A work of cabinetmaking and gilding made piece by piece, when the frame mattered as much as the glass itself.

The carving surrounds the oval with acanthus leaves, four open flowers at the cardinal points, a radial crest at the top, and a volute closing the base. All in wood covered with gold leaf. No current factory reproduces this openwork carving or this gilding.

At 75 cm wide and 110 cm high, it fills a wall with presence without needing more company. Above a hall console, presiding over a living room, or opposite a window that reflects light back into it.

No two are alike. There will be no replenishment.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The plant carving is openwork, not just engraved: the leaves separate from the oval, revealing the wall behind. This is what gives the mirror its lightness despite its size, and what no industrial mold can achieve.

→ The gold leaf retains its original wear. In the most exposed areas, the reddish background of the bole shows through, and the shine fades: this aging is not manufactured; it is earned over decades.

→ The oval shape softens any straight wall. It works equally well over classic furniture or against a plain, modern wall, where the contrast makes it even more striking.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

We have inspected the complete structure and consolidated the points where the openwork carving had become fragile over time. The wood has been treated against wood-boring insects, and the original gilding has been respectfully cleaned and stabilized, without regilding over it.

It retains its period gold leaf, its patina, and its integral form. The structure is firm, and the mirror is perfect for hanging. It arrives ready to take its place.
