DESCRIPTION

A home office requires furniture that can be closed. Not to hide anything, but because when the lid is lowered, the work disappears, and the room returns to being a living room.

This cylinder desk was made in France between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, in the Louis XVI style: fluted uprights, straight tapered legs, and octagonal bronze mounts with a pearl border. We chose it for its solid cylinder, made from a single piece with a molded panel, which is the less common variant of this type of furniture.

The front and sides are veneered with cherry quartersawn panels and cross-banded walnut, with the grain running against the bias, creating that orange flame pattern. Lifting the cylinder reveals small drawers in three columns and a pull-out writing surface, lined with aged fabric. Below, four long lockable drawers, all with their keys. The drawers are joined with hand-cut dovetails, and the locks are made of wrought iron with individually riveted nails.

124 cm wide, 60 cm deep, and 126 cm high, with the writing surface at 90 cm. It is a piece of furniture for an office, a living room nook, or a spacious master bedroom, where writing and discreet storage are needed.

WHAT TO LOOK AT CLOSELY

→ The dovetails. Large, irregular, with contraction cracks in the wood: they were hand-cut, and you can see them when you pull out any of the four drawers.

→ The wrought-iron lock. Iron plate with hand-riveted round-head nails, the same one that has secured the top drawer since the furniture was made.

→ The back. Hand-sawn boards, joined with wrought-iron nails, with the gaps left by the wood contracting over two centuries. It's the part almost no one looks at and the one that says the most.

INTERVENTION AND CONSERVATION — NAVALCARNERO WORKSHOP, MADRID

The entire internal structure, drawers, and cylinder mechanism were inspected. The bronze mounts were cleaned, and the wood received an exterior cleaning and finish. The original, deteriorated leather on the writing tray was replaced with aged fabric.

The signs of use have not been touched: they are as they were when the piece arrived from France.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know it's late 18th century and not a reproduction?

A: By its construction: hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, wrought iron locks with riveted nails, and a back made of hand-sawn planks with forged nails. None of these three things have been made this way for over a century.

What work was done in the workshop?

A: The internal structure, drawers, and cylinder were checked, the bronzes were cleaned, and the exterior was cleaned and finished. The leather on the writing surface was replaced with an aged fabric. The signs of use have not been touched.

Does the cylinder work and do the drawers close?

A: Yes. The cylinder moves up and down its full range, and the four long drawers lock. The keys are delivered with the furniture.

How is shipping handled for a piece of this size?

A: Shipping is free throughout the Iberian Peninsula. Delivery is carried out by the store's own staff: we place the piece inside the home, where access allows, and remove the packaging. We do not deliver to the curb.

What guarantees does Antique Arte y Decoración offer?

A: We have been specializing in the selection and restoration of antique furniture since 2015. More than 3,500 families throughout Spain and a rating of 4.9 out of 5 on Google. You can contact us before purchasing for any questions about the piece.
