DESCRIPTION

There's an area in a house that dictates the feel of everything else: the first stretch, the one you cross when you enter. It doesn't need a lot of furniture. It needs one piece that has something to say.

This single-body sideboard, from the late 19th century, has just that. It is constructed from walnut, with the open, vibrant grain that only this wood provides, and topped with a white marble slab with grey veins. The style is Napoleon III: ebonized turned columns on the sides, black moldings framing each plane, and that combination of warm walnut and deep black that defines the second half of the 19th century.

The upper drawer features an openwork carving of intertwined links, handmade and highlighted in black. The lower door repeats the theme: a cut-out geometric molding framing a central carved medallion. Inside, the drawer retains its solid oak and original dovetail joints — the kind of carpentry that is no longer done. Behind the door, a shelf organizes the space.

At 105.5 cm high and 80 cm wide, it is a vertical piece of furniture that maximizes space without spreading out: ideal for an entrance hall, a wide corridor, or as a support in a living room. The marble top can hold whatever you place on it — a lamp, flowers, your keys when you arrive home.

No two are alike. There will be no restocking.

── WHAT WE LOVE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The original marble top. It's not a decorative addition: the piece was designed to feature it. The veined white marble on warm walnut creates a contrast that no laminated board can achieve.

→ The ebonizing. The black-stained columns and moldings, imitating ebony, are a signature of the 19th century. That contrast between walnut and black is not manufactured today; it was achieved by hand, layer by layer.

→ The honest joinery. The oak drawer with dovetails, the solid wood, the joints that have lasted over a hundred years. This is what distinguishes an antique piece from one that only looks old.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

In the workshop, we reviewed the entire structure, adjusted the door's closure and the drawer's slide, and reinforced the joints where a century of use demanded it. We treated the wood against wood-boring insects and refinished the surface by hand, respecting the tone and patina of the walnut.

The door and drawer operate smoothly, the marble top sits firmly, and the finish is stable. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specialists since 2015 in antique furniture, with our own workshop in Navalcarnero and serving over 3,500 families across Spain.

Preguntas frecuentes
